If you’re looking for an SEO agency in Tampa Bay, the most useful recommendation isn’t a single name. It’s a short list of three agencies that suit the kind of business you run, compared side by side on the same questions. This guide covers the five kinds of SEO provider you’ll meet here, who each one suits, what the work usually costs, and how to narrow it down. We’re one of the agencies you could shortlist, so we’ve tried to be fair about where we fit and where we don’t.
Learning objectives
By the end of this guide you’ll be able to:
- Tell the five kinds of SEO provider apart, and know which suits your business.
- Use published survey data to judge whether a quote is in a normal range.
- Shortlist three agencies and compare them on the same terms.
- Spot the point where a recommendation should become a “no”.
Start with your business, not the agency
The right agency depends on what you need Google to do for you. A plumber in Brandon wants the phone to ring from people within a few miles. A law firm in Westshore wants to rank for a handful of high-value searches across Hillsborough County. An online store shipping across the country barely cares about the map at all.
So before you ask anyone for a recommendation, write down three things: where your customers are, how they find businesses like yours, and what a good month looks like in calls or bookings. Every agency you speak to should be able to tell you how they’d move that last number. If they can’t, they aren’t the right fit, however well known they are.
The five kinds of SEO provider in Tampa Bay
Local specialists. Small teams that spend most of their time on Google Business Profiles, map rankings and the websites behind them. They tend to suit single-location service businesses, and you usually speak to the person doing the work. Our Tampa SEO services sit in this group.
Full-service agencies. One team for SEO, paid ads, web design and social media. They’re useful when you want everything in one place, but ask who actually does the SEO, because in some agencies it’s a small part of a large account.
National agencies. Built for brands competing across several states, with bigger content and link-building programmes. The work can be excellent; the local knowledge is often thinner.
Freelancers. Good for a defined job, such as a technical audit or a set of service pages. Less suited to ongoing work that needs several skills at once.
Reseller platforms. Some agencies sell a package that’s delivered by a third-party platform. You’ll often recognise it by long lists of monthly “tasks” and an automated report. It rarely suits a business that needs real local work.
What the work usually costs
Prices vary so much that a quote on its own tells you little. Two published surveys give a useful baseline. Ahrefs polled 439 SEO providers and found the most common monthly retainer was $501 to $1,000, chosen by 20.4% of them. Local SEO averaged $1,557 a month, and the average hourly rate was $111. A separate survey of 260 agencies by SE Ranking and Duda, published in December 2024, found that 64% of agencies charge less than $1,000 a month.
Our own local SEO plans start at $300 a month, and we publish our prices so you can compare before you call anyone. For a closer look at local rates, see how much SEO costs in Tampa.
How to shortlist three agencies
Ask people you trust. Other business owners, your accountant, the chamber of commerce and local business groups are better sources than paid “best agency” lists. Ask what changed after they hired the agency, not just whether they liked them.
Check results you can verify. A good agency can point to a client listing that ranks in the map pack, or a case study with the data behind it. Screenshots of rankings with no context prove very little.
Read their reviews. Look at the agency’s own Google reviews and what clients actually describe. Ours are all on our reviews page, word for word.
Get the price in writing. Ask each agency for a written scope and a monthly price before the sales call. An agency that understands its own costs can do that.
Compare the first three months. Put the three proposals side by side and ask what each agency will do in month one, two and three. The vague one is usually the one to drop. Our guide on what to ask a Tampa Bay SEO agency has the full list of questions.
When a recommendation should become a “no”
Walk away from any agency that guarantees a #1 ranking, won’t tell you what the work involves, wants to own your Google Business Profile or website, or locks you into a long contract before showing results. We cover these in more detail in SEO agency red flags.
Choosing an SEO agency: five terms
Key takeaways
- Fit comes first. Pick the kind of agency that suits your business before comparing names.
- Shortlist three. One quote gives you nothing to compare against.
- Use published prices as a baseline. The most common retainer in the Ahrefs survey was $501 to $1,000 a month.
- Verify, don’t trust. Ask for results and reviews you can check yourself.
- Keep ownership. Every account and asset should be in your name.
Quiz: test what you learned
Five questions on this guide. Tap a question to see the answer.
1. What should you decide before asking anyone for an agency recommendation?
Where your customers are, how they find businesses like yours, and what a good month looks like in calls or bookings.
2. Which kind of provider usually suits a single-location service business?
A local specialist, which spends most of its time on Google Business Profiles, map rankings and the websites behind them.
3. In the Ahrefs survey, what was the most common monthly SEO retainer?
$501 to $1,000 a month, chosen by 20.4% of the 439 providers surveyed.
4. Why compare three agencies instead of one?
Because a single quote gives you nothing to measure it against. Three proposals side by side show what each agency would actually do.
5. Name two signs that should turn a recommendation into a "no".
Any two of: a guaranteed #1 ranking, no clear description of the work, the agency keeping ownership of your profile or website, or a long contract before any results.
