How much SEO costs in Tampa depends on what you’re buying. A Google Business Profile tune-up, a technical audit and a year of content and link building are all called “SEO”, and they’re priced very differently. This guide lists the main types of SEO project, the average prices from Ahrefs’ survey of 439 SEO providers, and our own published prices beside the expensive options. In short: local SEO averaged $1,557 a month in that survey. Ours starts at $300.
Learning objectives
By the end of this guide you’ll know:
- The main types of SEO project and how each is usually priced.
- The average prices from a published survey of SEO providers.
- How our prices compare with typical agency rates.
- How to check whether a Tampa quote is realistic for the work it lists.
How SEO is priced: retainer, project or hourly
There are three common ways to pay for SEO. In the Ahrefs survey, 78.2% of providers charged a monthly retainer, 48.9% charged per project and 34.8% charged by the hour. Many offer more than one.
- Monthly retainer. A fixed fee for ongoing work. This is how most local SEO is sold, because rankings are built and kept over months.
- One-off project. A defined piece of work with a fixed price, such as a technical audit, a site migration or a set of new pages.
- Hourly. Useful for advice or small fixes. The average SEO hourly rate in the survey was $111.
Average SEO prices by type of project
These are the figures from Ahrefs’ survey (updated August 2024). They cover providers across the US and beyond, so they’re a baseline rather than a Tampa price list.
- Local SEO retainer: $1,557 a month on average. Agencies averaged $1,819 and freelancers $1,150.
- All SEO retainers from agencies: $3,209 a month on average. This includes national and ecommerce work, which pulls the average up.
- Most common retainer band: $501 to $1,000 a month, chosen by 20.4% of providers.
- One-off projects: the most common fee was $2,501 to $5,000, chosen by 21.2% of providers.
- Hourly rate: $111 on average.
A separate December 2024 survey of 260 agencies by SE Ranking and Duda found that 64% of agencies charge less than $1,000 a month, and that the most common project fee was $500 to $2,000. Different samples give different averages, which is one reason to compare the work behind a quote, not just the number.
What pushes a Tampa quote up
Three things move the price more than anything else.
How many locations you have. Each location needs its own Google Business Profile, citations, reviews and page. A business with branches in Brandon and South Tampa is buying more work than one with a single shop.
How crowded your category is. Search your main service from your own address and look at who ranks. If the map is full of established competitors with strong websites and hundreds of reviews, there’s more work to do. Personal injury law in Hillsborough County is a very different job from a specialist repair shop in Temple Terrace.
How much content you want. New pages and articles are the biggest variable cost in most SEO work. One page a month and six pages a month are priced very differently.
Our prices vs the expensive options
We publish our prices because most Tampa agencies don’t, and it’s hard to compare quotes without a reference point. Here’s how they sit against the survey figures.
We can price lower than the averages because we focus on local businesses competing in their own area, which needs fewer pages and less national link building than the work that pulls the averages up. If your business needs more than our plans cover, we’ll say so and price it separately. Full details are on our pricing page, and you can see how we work in Tampa on our Tampa SEO services page.
How to check a quote is realistic
Divide the monthly fee by a realistic hourly rate. At the survey’s $111 average, $500 a month buys roughly four to five hours of work, and $1,500 buys about thirteen or fourteen. Then read the list of tasks in the proposal and ask whether it could be done in that time. If a cheap package lists thirty monthly tasks, most of them are automated or not happening.
Ask too for the first three months in writing, who owns your accounts, and how results will be reported. Our guide on what to ask a Tampa Bay SEO agency has the full list, and stop spending thousands on local SEO in Tampa covers where agencies tend to overcharge.
