Plenty of Tampa businesses spend thousands of dollars a month on local SEO and can’t say what they’re getting for it. Local SEO isn’t cheap to do well, but it’s often sold with costs that have nothing to do with the work. In Ahrefs’ survey of 439 SEO providers, the average local SEO retainer was $1,557 a month. Our plans start at $300. This guide covers where the extra money goes, how to vet an agency before you sign, and how the options compare side by side.
Learning objectives
By the end of this guide you’ll be able to:
- Recognise the four most common ways local SEO is overcharged.
- Check whether a quote’s price fits the hours of work behind it.
- Vet a Tampa SEO agency with a short set of questions.
- Compare the main types of provider on price, contract, reporting and ownership.
How agencies overcharge for local SEO
Tasks that don’t happen. Some packages list dozens of monthly tasks: “50 directory submissions”, “20 social bookmarks”, “keyword monitoring”. Most are automated, and some do nothing for your rankings. At the survey’s $111 average hourly rate, $500 a month buys four or five hours of work. A long task list at that price isn’t possible done by hand.
Long contracts. Six- or twelve-month terms are common. They’re often explained by the fact that SEO takes months, which is true, but they also protect an agency that does little early on. You keep paying either way.
Work that doesn’t fit the business. A single-location plumber in Brandon doesn’t need a national link-building programme or forty blog posts a month. For map rankings, the Google Business Profile, reviews, citations and well-built service pages do most of the work. In our St. Petersburg map pack study, 58% of the businesses in the top three were within a mile of the person searching. Local rankings are won close to home.
Setup fees with nothing behind them. A real setup fee pays for an audit, tracking, profile cleanup and a baseline you keep. A setup fee that produces a PDF of automated scores is just money.
How to vet an SEO agency in Tampa
A few questions will tell you most of what you need.
- How many hours a month does my fee buy, and who does them? You want a number and a name, not a range of “deliverables”.
- What will you do in the first three months? Specific work, in order, tied to your business.
- Can I see a sample report? It should show calls, form leads and map rankings across your area, not just traffic.
- Who owns my Google Business Profile, website, analytics and content? The only acceptable answer is you.
- What’s the contract and notice period? Month to month, or a short term with a clear exit, is reasonable.
- Can I speak to two current clients? Ideally in a business like yours.

Techy Toes vs the other options, side by side
We won’t name other agencies, but we can compare the kinds you’ll come across in Tampa. Individual agencies differ, so use this as a list of things to ask about.
Techy Toes. Local SEO from $300 a month and website SEO from $400, published on our pricing page. Month to month, done by our own team, reported on calls and leads, and every account stays in your name.
National agencies. Strong on large content programmes and multi-state brands. In the Ahrefs survey, agencies averaged $1,819 a month for local SEO, and many ask for longer contracts.
Local full-service agencies. One team for SEO, ads and design. They can be a good fit; ask how much of your fee goes to SEO and who does it.
Reseller packages. Cheap monthly plans delivered by a third-party platform. Low prices, but the work is mostly automated and the reports are generic.
Paying less for local SEO: five cards
Key takeaways
- Check the hours. A fee divided by a realistic hourly rate shows what’s possible.
- Avoid lock-in. Month to month, or a short term with a clear exit.
- Pay for work that fits. Local rankings come from local work.
- Ask for real reports. Calls, leads and map rankings across your area.
- Keep ownership. Everything should stay in your name.
